Music and Rituals

I feel like almost every ritual that you can think of has a piece of music that goes with it. One correlation between rituals and music that brings back some old memories would be my high school graduation. Once everyone had walked the stage, gotten our diplomas, and threw our hats I remember hearing the song "Congratulations" by Post Malone. I think that this was a great choice of song for this occasion because it made me feel proud of myself for what I had accomplished throughout high school.

Another event that I have been to that did a good job of having the right music for the ritual would be at my Cousin's wedding reception. At this wedding reception it was more of like a party so everyone was just dancing and having a good time and I can remember the song "Down" by Jay Sean (ft. Lil Wayne) playing and I feel like when that song came on everyone was like actually getting down and showing off all their moves. Now every time that I hear this song I immediately just think back to this reception and how it had such an affect on everybody there and how it just made the reception so much more fun.
The next ritual that I feel like is probably the most important would be at almost every sporting event when we hear the national anthem. I say this because the national anthem is known by every American and it symbolizes our Country's history and our traditions. One time that the national anthem is played when it is heard the most would be at the Super Bowl and it is sung by a different famous artist every year making it very looked up too. In the last year the national anthem was performed by Chris Stapleton and I think he did a stellar job.

  1. Even if Post Malone didn't mean to, I believe his "congratulation song" was played nationwide for many graduation parties at the time (which helped him make so much $). I find it cool that if there was 1 song American citizens would learn it would be the National Anthem. Almost all of the United states can sing the Anthem with and without the music which is very impressive about our country (im sure all countries are the same but it's still mind blowing).

  2. It seems like that when songs are attached with both negative and positive rituals (like your cousin's birthday) they can enhance your experience at that moment and make it more memorable. I share a similar experience with the same song "Down" at my Aunt and Uncle's wedding. Everybody was able to loosen up and really kick the night off once this song was played.
The National Anthem does seem to be very important in bringing people at sporting events together, I agree.

  3. Hi Eli! First of all, I can totally relate to Post Malone's "Congratulations" being associated with graduation, as I played it at my grad party like a lot of other people LOL. I feel like a lot of people immediately think of the song when their graduation comes up too. Second, I think it's nice that you associate "Down" to a good memory - this song reminds me of my childhood to be honest, haha. And the National Anthem definitely does bring a lot of people together, especially when it is sang at large sports events.

  4. I think the song "Congratulations," was such a great choice for that moment. I think it's cool how when you hear that song that moment will always be attached to it. Also, my school didn't let us throw our caps cause it was a "safety hazard."

  5. I like the part where you include how songs can make you remember a situation whether it be good or bad, the same thing relates to my life. I also like the part where you include Post Malone "congratulations" for being associated with graduation.

  6. I like that you included the songs so it gave me a refresher on what songs you were talking about. But I can relate with you on the graduation. I remember them playing that song at my graduation too. Great job.
